Hi from Antarctica! My name is Sara and I've been down here for almost a month. I have a few photos to share with you.

Antarctica is located at the bottom of the earth. It is a place covered in snow but does have an active volcano called Mt. Erebus. Because of the volcano there is a lot of brown dirt that covers the area.

Most of the ice is at least 6 feet think and can be much thinker in other parts. The average temperature in the summer is around 0 degrees. Also in the summer the sun is out 24 hours a day. There is no night. There are no trees here or any grass. Becasue there are not trees, the wind is always blowing. The wind makes the average temperature drop about 30 degrees.

Antarctica also has a lot of glacers. The glacers help to carve the vallys and create mountains.

To get here we rode in a military air plane called a C-17. It is able to carry passengers and cargo at the same time. The plane ride from Christchurch NZ takes about 5 hours.

The airplanes land on the ice and we ride in big busses to the town.

The town we live in is called McMurdo or Mac Town. There are about 900 people living here. Most of the buildings are dorms but there is a big building where they feed us. They dining hall is called the galley. We get fed cafateria style and have 4 meals a day. We have a coffee house, 3 gyms and a post office.

Becasue most of the town is covered in snow, most of the trucks have had there tires removed and tracks put in their place. The tracks move easier over the snow.

There are also some smaller cars that they use to move people.

Most of the time we have to dress really warm. We have big red coats that help with this. We also wear ski goggles or sunglasses any time we are out side.

The best part about Antarctica is the animals that live down here. There are

Seals

And Penguins. These are Emperior penguins. They can grow up to 3 feet tall. There are 10 different types of penguins here in Antarctica. They tend to migrate at different times of the year.

Some times we get snow storms. The wind blows really hard and it is hard to see across the street. When these storms occure, we stay inside and drink hot chocolate.

I have made some good friends down here. Hopefully some day you can come down too.
